Britain's Child Privacy Movement

Protecting Children's Online Privacy

After becoming more and more aware of how little privacy we have in this day and age, I wondered how this affected the most vulnerable group, children. To my delight I found a new child privacy effort taking place earlier this month in Great Britain. Britain's Information Commissioners Office proposed a code which listed many recommendations for online websites. It highly encouraged and focused on setting a global standard for children’s online privacy. To be more specific, it concentrated on banning what are called nudge techniques. Nudge techniques are defined as features that push users to share more personal information or spend more time on a website or app than they intended. I think this is a great movement and children should be protected from these nudging techniques. It urged that data collection should also be kept to a minimum and not be shared at all with third parties. I agree with this completely as children are the ones most vulnerable to fall victims to advertising directed at them after companies collect personal data. A movement like this one should be taken seriously and will hopefully gain traction in other countries, including the United States. To learn more about this issue click here!
